Metaphysical Third Commandment and
The Third Law of Prosperity
Over the last few weeks we have been looking closely at the Metaphysical meaning of the 1st and 2nd Commandments according to Emmet Fox's books “Around the Year with Emmet Fox” and 'The
Ten Commandments, the Master Key to Life”. We also looked at the 1st and 2nd Laws of Prosperity according to Georgianna Tree West's book, “ProsperityOs 10 Commandments”.
For those of you ,who were not here, from a Metaphysical Perspective the 1st two commandments are as follows:
- God and I are One
- Worship no false idols or graven images, put God first.
The first Law of Prosperity is “Thou shalt look to no other source but God for thy Supply” and the 2nd Law of Prosperity is “Thou shalt make no mental images of lack.”
Today we shall move on to the 3rd Commandment which reads according to the Lamsa Bible: “Thou shalt not take a false oath in the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not declare him innocent, who takes an oath in his name falsely.” In the New Revised Standard Oxford Bible it reads, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” Just reading these two, one can see there is a slightly different statement in each. The Oxford Bible makes it sound as if what we call swearing itself is what is very wrong. The Lamsa Bible does not read that way. However before we go into the commandment itself, I'd like us to look a little closer at its' author, Moses.
We've spoken of Moses multiple times but let us look again at the very beginning of his life. He was actually born to Hebrew parents in Egypt. The Pharaoh, or king of Egypt, began to notice that the Hebrews were growing quite numerous in population. He decided that the way to reduce this number was to kill for a period of time all the young boys, who were born to Hebrew parents. Moses survived this decree because his mother put her newborn baby boy in a basket and had her young daughter place the basket with Moses in it in the water, where it was well known that the Pharaoh's daughter and her maids went to bathe each day. Moses' older biological sister was instructed by the mother to hide in the reeds nearby watching the baby and waiting. The pharaohs' daughter found the baby and claimed him as her own. What women could resist a newborn baby? She immediately looked, of course, for a wet nurse, as the Hebrew mother anticipated that she would. The young Hebrew sister, Miriam, stepped out of the reeds and volunteered to find one for her. And, of course , she quickly did find one, his own mother. Now the big question is what does all this mean metaphysically? “Water stands for the human mind, the human personality especially our emotional nature.” states Emmet Fox. He goes on to say that 9/10ths of our personality is feeling and only 1/10th is knowledge. That is water and Moses had to be drawn out of it, out of his human personality, in order for him to be strong enough to later in life accomplish the path that he would eventually be destined to take.
Remember, in that day a child that was adopted was raised equal with all biological children; therefore, Moses was raised with all the benefits of being the true grandson of the pharaoh. There were many professions open to him; however , he chose to study for the priesthood and did so. He accomplished his studies and reached the last level, the 33rd level. Here he learned the omnipresence, omnipotent, omniscient of God. He learned that he and God were one. He learned it in his intellect but he did not feel it in his gut. This is evidenced by the fact that when he learned of his true Hebrew identity and witnessed the beating of a Hebrew slave by an Egyptian, he killed the Egyptian. At this point, I believe, he scared himself by his own power and fled Egypt, the land of materialism, a low level of consciousness, to the land of Midian, to Horeb, to the mountain, metaphysically to the highest level of his consciousness. However, he continued on into the wilderness, into involution, to be alone with the Spirit inside himself, to be alone with his own Christ consciousness. He realized that he was full of limitation, metaphysically darkness, materialism and ignorance. He had to study his faults and he did so. We are told, “Never sit down under your limitations” Metaphysically meaning your sense consciousness , materialism i. e. Love of things or a belief in your own impotence or inferiority, never say, “Well, I just have to put up with this poverty or this physical or emotional pain”. Turn to Spirit instead and do not take an ego plan for an answer. Moses , like all of us, first fought for his limitations, arguing with his higher conscious self. Finally he hears, “Go to Egypt, say to the children of Israel “I am” has sent me to you.” The phrase “I am” is extremely important to each of us. It is the way we name ourselves.
“I am sick, I am poor, I am sad, I am well, I am happy, I am prosperous.” Regardless of what is going on in the external world of the five senses, our “I am” can be prosperous, our thinking, our words, make it so.
Metaphysically we learn that “I am” is the name of God or Spirit within us, our Christ consciousness. When we say that I am a child of God that is stating the truth about “Spirit” within us. When we say “I am sick, I am Poor” that is actually taking the name of the Lord in vain. Thus, the 3rd Commandment of Moses is “Thou shalt not take the “I am” name of the Lord thy God in vain.” To say that “I am sick” or “I am Poor” is to say that Spirit is sick or poor, an impossibility. It is breaking the 3rd Commandment.
Most of us have previously believed that cussing or cursing was breaking that commandment. I know I did. But like most of these commandments they can go much deeper and more profound than mere truth on the surface or literal level. When we use the phrase “I am “, we are using God's name. God does not know sickness. God does not know poverty. And as God or Spirit lives within us, “as close as hands and feet”, “as close as breathing” neither could we know sickness or poverty.
Therefore, the 3rd Law of Prosperity is “ Thou shalt not speak a word of lack or limitation thus taking the “I am “ name of God in vain.” In our present day world, scary as it may appear sometimes, we are prosperous. Margaret Tree West in her book says, “Word is the action of our thoughts. No word comes out of our mouths or our writing unless it is 1st there as thought.” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “ We are what we think about all day long.”
Thus, when I say I am sick, I am poor, or I do not have adequate funds in my bank account, it is the result of thoughts and the beliefs formed by an unhealthy train of thoughts. I am taking the “I am” name of Spirit in vain. That train of thoughts needs instead to be healthy and I need to be fully conscious while thinking them in order to change them to a healthier perspective, one that I truly want in my life. I want to think and rather say I am well, I am prosperous, I have all that I will ever need and more. In these latter statements I can find peace. We could say that “words” are the expression of our thoughts in the world around us, the world that we as “light beings” create.
When we speak words we first must form them in our thoughts, then we speak them from our mouths, then we hear them with our ears; thus, we get the thought three times, thought, voice, and hearing. Metaphysically three represents completeness, every level of being; just as mind, idea, expression is the Trinity. Margaret Tree West in her book “Prosperity's 10 Commandments” states that “it is the same when we write; that is, there is thought, writing, and reading. Whatever we write or speak we are reinforcing our words many times over in our belief systems.” It does not matter whether our words are true or false, we still reinforce that which we say and that which we believe to be true. We actually, I believe, experience problems in our lives to help us grow, to change our judgmental, incorrect beliefs. Whenever we have a thought or train of thoughts that make an even stronger belief, and this thought or belief is incorrect, the result will be an incorrect answer to the problem that we are facing in life. We can always tell when the thought is incorrect for it brings, pain, upset, or suffering into our world. If the thought is correct or stronger as a train of thoughts is correct, peace, happiness and benefit for all is the result.
In the book of Job, which is actually according to Emmet Fox a play to illustrate the harm of worrying taking us from self conscious thinking to Spiritual thinking, Job recognizes the power of his thoughts. In the book of Proverbs, Solomon wrote, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is.” When we say “I am poor”, we are decreeing that God is poor. We are using the name of God falsely, in vain, for God knows only good and chooses to always give us the keys to the kingdom of Good. We need only to think it so. Our part in creating a happy life is thinking and speaking the words. Spirit's part is fulfilling what we speak, that is the Law of Creation. When we decree our abundance, regardless of what we see with our five senses, we make it so, first in our minds and then in our worlds.
Choose to think only thoughts of God's good will and Spirit's limitless power to provide for your every need, and it will materialize for you. Finally remember that it is your life, it is your decision. You choose how you wish to live and the choices are many. That is your gift from Spirit. Strive to stay as conscious as you can be. It is not always easy. I know personally how much easier it is to daydream but the cost is so high. Carolyn Myss tells a story about how daydreaming can get us into trouble. She says while we are vacuuming and we think, I wonder for what purpose I was born, then we continue to daydream about it. That 1st thought gets your Angel or Christ Consciousness off the couch, It says, “now that your thinking these kind of thoughts, you need a new partner. I'll give you a month to leave and then I'll cause an affair to happen You choose”, but you are still daydreaming so you never hear it. It also says,” and by the way, now that your thinking and asking these kinds of questions, you are in the wrong job. You have a while to quit, then I'll get you fired.” A month later you're unemployed and alone and you don't know what hit you. Your life has turned upside down and you don't know why. Yes, the cost of daydreaming is high, a real reason to stay conscious and alert and to let Go and let God. Because according to Carolyn your higher consciousness continues working, you think you have a craving for coffee but you don't really. You are supposed to stop at Starbucks for there is someone there for you to meet, someone with your new consciousness. You walk in to order coffee, see this person and if you are open and not judgmental about how they remind you of so and so, you actually meet them. You're on your way to a new life . You're finally trusting Spirit. Then if you can stay awake and conscious, you might find yourself happy at last. You might actually begin to think, I am happy, you say it, you hear it, and you feel. You are complete.
So here are the three commandments of Prosperity:
- Thou shalt look to no other source but God for thy supply.
- Thou shalt make no mental images of lack.
- Thou shalt not speak the word of lack or limitation thus taking the "I am" name of God in vain.
In the words of Napoleon Hill in his book, “Think and Grow Rich” he writes, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, he can achieve.” Therefore if you choose, regardless of your circumstances, to think “I am prosperous” or “I am healthy”, think it, then go forth and be at peace. Try it. I plan to. Let's see what happens.
Namaste,
Barbara
